Studies on the Reduction of Dehydroascorbic Acid by Guinea Pig Tissues*

چکیده
It has been suggested frequently that one of the functions of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in the animal organism may be that of a respiratory catalyst (l-6). The factors responsible for the postulated reversible oxidation and reduction of ascorbic acid by animal tissues have been poorly defined, however. Aside from the qualitative observation (1) that ‘(hexuronic acid” slowly reduced cytochrome C, animal tissue constituents responsible for the oxidation of ascorbic acid, either directly or by catalysis, have not been identified. The reduction of dehydroascorbic acid by animal tissues, based on urinary excretion (4, 7) and tissue storage (8) of ascorbic acid after administration of dehydroascorbic acid, has been attributed to glutathione by Borsook et al. (4), although the possibility of enzymic reduction (9) has not been excluded. The observation of Szent-Gyorgyi (1) that reversibly oxidized hexuronic (ascorbic) acid could be reduced by fixed -SH and glutathione has been followed by quantitative experiments by Hopkins and Morgan (3) and by Borsook et al. (4). The last two papers cited review the available evidence that tissues tend to protect ascorbic acid from oxidation. Recently Masayama and Tatematsu (10) reported that very small amounts of tissue could exert this protection and Yamamoto (11) found that Z-adrenalin was similarly effective. Glutathione (12214) in small quantities, boiled tissues (15), and other substances forming copper complexes (16) can inhibit the aerobic oxidation of ascorbic acid by

BACKGROUND Selenium (Se), vitamin C and vitamin E function as antioxidants within the body. In this study, we investigated the effects of reduced dietary Se and L-ascorbic acid (AA) on vitamin C and alpha-tocopherol (AT) status in guinea pig tissues. METHODS Male Hartley guinea pigs were orally dosed with a marginal amount of AA and fed a diet deficient (Se-D/MC), marginal (Se-M/MC) or normal...
متن کاملPossible mechnisms of relaxant effect of Portulaca oleraceae on tracheal chains of guinea pig
Therapeutic effect of Portulaca oleraceae on respiratory diseases is indicated in Iranian ancient medical books. The relaxant effect of this plant also observed on smooth muscles in previous studies. Therefore, in the present study, the possible mechanism (s) for the relaxant effects of boiled and aqueous extracts of Portulaca oleraceae on tracheal chains of guinea pigs were examined. The relax...

It was previously reported by the authors (1) that, as long as pyruvate exists in the medium containing E. coli K12, dehydroascorbic acid is reduced , and this re ducing activity is dependent upon a pyruvate oxidase system. The presence of the mechanism of reducing dehydroascorbic acid into ascorbic acid in the bacterial cells would serve the regulation of ascorbic acid, protecting its decompos...
متن کاملPresence of prejunctional D2-dopaminoceptors and α2-adrenoceptors on the cholinergic nerve of the common bile duct of guinea pig
On most adrenergic and cholinergic nerve terminals, prejunctional α-adrenoceptors belonging to the α2-subtype have been identified. Activation of these receptors will decrease the release of norepinephrine. It has been reported that several isolated tissue preparations contain prejunctional dopamine receptors, the stimulation of which inhibits neurotransmission. It has remained uncertain whethe...
